I met Etta Eberhart when I was around 5 years old, and her family lived about 2 blocks from my house. One distinguishing fact that stood out during this time period was that she wore a nurse's uniform to work every day, 95% of our neighborhood did domestic work for white families, and dressed accordingly. M C Eberhart Sr. was living in Salt Lake City, I always heard about him from my parents but never actually met him. Etta, was the head of household for a very large family, worked all of the time and I would only see her on weekends. Harriet seemed to be in charge of things while her mother, Etta was not around. I was most attracted to M C Eberhart Jr. who was innovative, energetic and he was second in charge of running the household. M C had a paper route with over 150 customers, all of the black neighborhood, Woodlawn, which also included a section of a neighborhood known as "Cracker Town" just on the other side of the Seaboard lines railroad tracks. The northern side of our community was divided by the Southern Rail Road train tracks, about 500 feet from the Eberhart family's front door. M C Jr. quickly developed his business acumen and his paper route was expanding, like a monopoly, before television was available, and M C was a great economic engine to his household, at a time when it was sorely needed. Ethel Brown Buchalter, lived approximately one block away, I never knew that Ethel and Etta were sisters until I was over 40 and took a serious look at genealogy, and the underlying records. I never saw Ethel, Audrey, Jerry and Alphonso visiting the Eberhart residence. My own parents, Cora and William L Goodwin never told me that we were related to the Eberhart family. My father, MC Sr. and Etta had a close relationship but this relationship was never discussed in the presence of their children. Jesse and Constance would tell me that we were cousins but I never knew how to make the connection. I pray to God to be enabled to live long enough to write a book, write down all of the things that I have learned, my worldly travels, and this Website is one of the vehicles that is helping me to learn more and share information

This picture of the Eberhart family was taken in the late 1940's apparently before Marvin Charles was born and it appears that "Baby Etta" as we called her was under 5 years old. M C Eberhart Sr. moved to Salt Lake City, Utah long before the rest of the family, and I started school at 5, passed their house everyday, played there often and never met M C Eberhart Sr.
